10 things you should NOT DO on Instagram

Don’t use an awkward username on Instagram
As you could probably observe, the Instagram search engine is not that powerful as, for example, Google’s or other sites’. This is why, it is important not to use an awkward username, or a complex one (which besides letters includes many symbols and numbers). It will make hard to find and follow you, especially for people who have just heard of you or your brand. We advise to build your username basing on your personal name or the name of your brand. Also, it would be better to use the same username you use on other social networks as Twitter, Messenger, TikTok etc.
Don’t set your profile to private
Unless you are using Instagram solely for personal reasons and don’t want to network, do NOT set your account to Private. It is better to set your account to Public so that new followers can see what you post and what you’re about. You will gain followers much more quickly if they can see your content and don’t have to wait for approval, in order to get news from you on a permanent basis. Make people feel invited to your account.
Don’t post without a caption
No matter how awesome your image is, and how lucidly it transmits, it needs a caption. Posts with captions get higher levels of engagement and they allow you to interact with your audience. Tell people what the photo is, share a quote, ask a question. Whatever it is, find something relevant to include on your posts. A post should always transmit a message, and tell your story, so do it directly.
Don’t overuse or misuse hashtags
Hashtags are extremely important on Instagram and should be used on every post to increase reach. However, using more than 7-10 hashtags is overkill. Choose 5-7 relevant hashtags to include in your caption. Don’t use popular hashtags like #tagforlikes or #onedirection or #love if they have absolutely nothing to do with your post. Using inappropriate hashtags to show up in popular searches won’t help you reach new followers – you’ll actually end up alienating possible followers. Look up the most popular hashtags of the past month to see if any are closely relevant to your own style of photos (if they’re not, don’t use them). Otherwise, just try typing a range of hashtags within Instagram. You’ll then be given a selection of related hashtags to choose between, along with the number of posts that include that hashtag.
Don’t Ignore Analytics
If your Instagram account is a business account (you’ll need to link your account to a Facebook Page for this), you have access to some basic, but useful analytics. You’ll be shown a breakdown of your follower demographics (sex, age, and location), including when they are most active. You can also see the impressions and reach of each of your posts, to see which ones really resonated. Keeping an eye on all of this will help you to more consistently choose the right kind of posts for your followers.
Don’t ignore your followers and their feedback
When visitors to your Instagram account take time out to comment on your posts, respond! Do not ever waste these opportunities for engagement on this or any other social media platform. Followers who get that kind of personal attention are far more likely to keep coming back and stay in the fold. Make sure you check your notifications regularly to stay on top of comments. Then respond (using their @username to notify them) and thank them or answer their question. When used regularly, comments will significantly impact your relationship with your audience.
Don’t steal other Instagram users’ content
Just because you like someone else’s photo doesn’t mean you can post it as your own. If you want to utilize user generated content (UGC) in your strategy, have users tag you or use hashtags on their posts. When reposting, always, always, always provide proper attribution. There are some third-party apps which will allow you to repost another user’s post to your account while giving proper attribution to the original user.
Don’t overdo the selfies
I get it, we all love a good selfie. But one good selfie is enough. Unless you’re Kim Kardashian – nope, not even then – you don’t need a selfie a day. And definitely not multiple selfies a day! Want to show off your outfit, show off your outfit. Want to show off your vacation spot, show off the scenery. If you’re using Instagram to grow your business, a bunch of selfies won’t help you.
You don’t want to make visitors think you’ve abandoned your Instagram, so don’t let too many days go by without posting. On the other hand, don’t post an avalanche of photos at one time. If you must put multiple shots on right now, make a collage with them. Otherwise, cherry pick your visuals for timing and effect, and never post shot after shot.
Speaking of branding, it’s a mystery why so many businesses work so hard on branding only to let rogue social media accounts dilute their message. People follow your accounts and stick with you because you consistently give them the value they’re looking for. A new visitor’s first experience of your Instagram should give them a visually interesting and varied yet on-point message.
